New MD Smoke Alarm Law
Email Email Print Print RSS RSS Facebook Google+ Twitter

New state law takes effect January 1, 2018 regarding all residential smoke alarms, this includes single family homes as well as apartment buildings.

Maryland state law requires all battery operated smoke alarms be replaced with 10 year sealed battery units, regardless of their age.
The new ones have a sealed-in lithium ion battery that lasts 10 years eliminating the need to change the batteries every six months. They also have a hush button to temporarily silence the alarm. Hard wired alarms must also be replaced if they are more than 10 years old.

The Maryland law that took effect on July 1, 2013, required the old smoke alarms to be replaced when they were 10 years old. The date the smoke alarm was manufactured should be on the back of the unit. If a date can’t be found on the unit, then the smoke alarm is most likely more than 10 years old.

Please be an advocate for fire safety and change your smoke alarms.
